March 20: Safety Night
The St. Charles County Autism Support Group's March meeting will be a presentation on safety and autism. Agenda: The Crider Center will discuss protecting our children from bullying at school. First responders will present on how to be prepared for an emergency Deputy Steve Case will demonstrate the Care Trak system that locates lost children (Project Lifesaver) and also share a video on Autism and Law Enforcement A 4 Paws for Ability family will discuss the use of autism assistance dogs for children that elope We will also provide resources and information on: Modifying your home for children that escape or have aggressive outbursts Identification kits and jewelry Communicating with individuals with limited language Database for individuals that wander or elope

Behavior Solutions will begin providing implementation (intensive ABA) and behavior assistant services in January, 2008. Behavior assistants will provide 1:1 intensive teaching (ABA), assistance in carrying out a behavior plan at home, school or community location, and provision of training to caregivers/staff on use of the behavior plan. The service will provide clients with additional learning opportunities and provide relief for caregivers/staff needing additional supports managing behaviors between consultant visits.
Behavior Assistants will work under the direction and supervision of one of our Behavior Consultants. Behavior Solutions is a provider with First Steps, Department of Mental Health DD Home and Community based waivers, Eastern Missouri Autism Project (EMAP), private pay, and some insurances. Funding may also be available through grants from the St. Charles Developmental Disabilities Board and Autism Speaks that Behavior Solutions has been awarded.

Coming to the Jefferson City Area...Linn, MO

We want to let you know about a Wrightslaw Special Education Law and Advocacy Training taking place in Linn, Missouri on May 15, 2008.

Missouri Parents Act (MPACT) and Pete Wright would appreciate your help in passing information about this program on to others who might be interested in it.

Program Description

Participants will learn about changes in IDEA 2004 including:

* New requirements for initial evaluations, reevaluations & parental consent
* New requirements for IEPs, IEP goals, IEP teams, IEP meetings
* New eligibility issues for students with specific learning disabilities
* New procedural requirements and timelines, including the “Due Process Complaint Notice” and “Resolution (IEP) Session.”

Participants will also learn how to:

* Use tests and measurements to measure progress
* Write SMART IEPs
* Use tactics and strategies for effective advocacy

Wrightslaw programs are designed to meet the needs of parents, educators, health care providers, advocates and attorneys who represent children with disabilities regarding special education. The program is not disability specific.
